Lagos State has been announced as the first African city to host the E1 Racing Championship, an international electric boat racing event, scheduled for October 4–5, 2025. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed the news following his visit to Monaco, where he attended the latest championship stage. He described the experience as a “powerful reminder of how bold innovation and forward-thinking ideas can shape the future of clean energy and sustainable transportation.”

Sanwo-Olu expressed pride in Lagos being selected, saying the event “puts the city at the centre of global clean energy conversations.” He emphasized that it would highlight Lagos’ culture, energy, and people. The governor praised Afreximbank’s support, calling it a sign of faith in the state’s innovation capacity. “The world will see Lagos not just as a megacity, but as a pioneer in environmental responsibility and marine innovation,” he said.
