The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is considering an extension of the current third term for public primary schools following a prolonged teachers’ strike that disrupted the academic calendar.
The strike, which began in March, led to the suspension of second-term examinations. Teachers protested the non-payment of salary arrears and the failure to implement the new minimum wage. Though the strike was suspended Tuesday night, schools now face a compressed term ending July 25.
A senior official at the FCT Education Secretariat said, “We are already discussing it, and the secretariat will meet with the NUT to come up with something that will be helpful to the pupils.”
Suleiman Hassan, Chairman of the FCT Universal Education Board, confirmed ongoing consultations with the NUT.
Retired principal Alhaji Daodu Mustapha stated, “There are no two ways about it; the session must be extended for them,” adding that Primary Six pupils especially need support to qualify for Junior Secondary School.
