Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has directed lawyers and court officials to stop using “Barrister” as a prefix to their names in all official engagements at the Supreme Court, effective immediately.

No more “Barrister” at the apex court. Per PUNCH, the directive came via a memorandum dated July 13, 2026, signed by Chief Registrar Kabir Akanbi, addressed to litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars and lawyers.
The memo described the title as “inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards of professionalism” expected at the Supreme Court, ordering officers to discontinue its use in official correspondence, records, documents and identity materials with immediate effect. Heads of Departments were also tasked with enforcing compliance.
The move follows a recent warning from the Council of Legal Education, which cautioned prospective lawyers against wearing wigs and gowns before being formally called to the Bar.
