A chilling investigation has exposed Nigeria’s online sextortion underworld. Per Sahara Reporters, a documentary by anti-fraud firm Sumsub follows former prosecutor Erin and cybersecurity researcher Paul as they pose online to track down blackmailers targeting teenage boys with explicit images.
The pair say more than 60 teens have died by suicide after being scammed. Their probe led them to Lagos, where they witnessed alleged “Yahoo Plus” ritual practices, met self-confessed scammers, and traced suspects using Bitcoin-tracking tools built by scam-baiter Kitboga.
Criminologist Prof. Adedeji Oyenuga told investigators the fraud is driven by “relative deprivation” rather than poverty. Evidence gathered was submitted to Nigerian authorities, though no arrests had been made by the documentary’s release.
