Paper certificates are officially history. According to Vanguard, the National Population Commission has scrapped manual birth and death registration nationwide, warning that only certificates from its new E-CRVS digital platform, live since July 1, will be recognised.
NPC’s Abia State commissioner, Rev. Emma Trumps Eke, said the shift would enable real-time registration, cut fraud and boost national planning, warning that officials issuing manual certificates now face disciplinary action, including dismissal.
The new database will link with NIMC, immigration and road safety agencies, making birth records verifiable for passports, licences and bank accounts. Citizens can register online, with applications authenticated within 72 hours. Eke also revealed the next national census is expected after the 2027 elections.
