South African authorities are investigating the death of Nigerian man Ibeh Chika Simon, who collapsed and died during a police arrest in Cape Town, with a post-mortem showing bruises and abrasions on his body.

He collapsed during arrest — and now South Africa wants answers. According to the BBC, Ibeh Chika Simon, 42, died last week while being arrested by police in Cape Town, with a post-mortem showing bruises and abrasions on his back and chest.
Western Cape police said Simon “became unwell and collapsed” as officers moved to arrest him after finding an unlicensed firearm and suspected drugs at the scene. Paramedics declared him dead on the spot.
Nigeria’s consul general, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, demanded a transparent probe, alleging a pattern of unresolved deaths of foreign nationals. She also claimed another Nigerian, Egwabor Patrick Chuks, was shot during the same operation — a claim police say has no record.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating.
