Videos circulating over the weekend showed South African police officers assaulting the man, using what looked like a polyethylene bag to strangle him as he pleaded his innocence.
Nigeria’s consul-general in Johannesburg, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, condemned the death, noting it came just after another Nigerian, Egwabor Patrick Chuks, was shot and remains hospitalised with severe injuries. The statement called it part of a troubling pattern of extrajudicial killings amid rising afrophobic sentiment, demanding accountability for those responsible.
This brings the total reported deaths of Nigerians in South Africa to five.
