Tinubu to Atiku: I’m cleaning up the pension mess you left behind

President Tinubu says his administration is settling pension obligations left unpaid from the Obasanjo-era privatisation programme chaired by Atiku Abubakar, while Atiku’s camp defends the reforms as foundational to Nigeria’s current pension system.

Tinubu: I’m Clearing Pensions Mess Atiku Created

President Bola Tinubu has taken a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, saying his government is “clearing the mess” left behind from unpaid pensions tied to the Obasanjo-era privatisation programme Atiku once chaired. Speaking at the State House while receiving Northeast leaders, Tinubu insisted the economy has “stabilised” and reforms are on course, according to The Nation.

Without naming Atiku directly, he said the privatisation exercise failed pensioners. In response, Atiku’s media office defended the Obasanjo administration’s Pension Reform Act 2004, saying it inherited a broken scheme with over ₦2 trillion in liabilities and built the current Contributory Pension Scheme.
