Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain impartial and resist political pressure ahead of the 2027 general elections. During a courtesy visit from INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, Abubakar stressed the importance of ensuring free, fair, and credible elections, urging the commission to ignore distractions and uphold their oaths of office.
Abubakar acknowledged the challenging nature of the INEC Chairman’s role, noting that the commission often faces accusations of bias regardless of their actions. He pledged support for INEC, emphasizing that the nation’s democracy depends on their integrity. The visit also highlighted the upcoming Osun governorship election as a crucial test for the 2027 polls.
