The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has killed at least 131 people, prompting the WHO to declare an international public health emergency.
At least 131 people have died in an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, health authorities confirmed on Monday.
DR Congo Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said the reported deaths were suspected to be linked to the outbreak ravaging the country’s eastern Ituri province.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern over the spread of the disease, saying he was “deeply concerned about the scale and speed of the epidemic.”
“Early on Sunday, I declared a public health emergency of international concern over an epidemic of Ebola disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda,” Ghebreyesus told the World Health Assembly in Geneva.
The outbreak has heavily affected the border region near Uganda and South Sudan, where high population movement linked to mining activities has complicated containment efforts.
The WHO is expected to hold an emergency committee meeting on Tuesday.
