‘We’re extremely vulnerable’ — FBI warns of possible Iranian drone attack on California

The FBI has warned law enforcement in California of a potential Iranian drone attack, with a former US Army intelligence expert saying the United States remains vulnerable to such strikes.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued an urgent warning to law enforcement agencies across California over a potential drone attack allegedly linked to Iran. The alert, which surfaced on Wednesday, indicated that Iranian forces may attempt a surprise strike using unmanned aerial vehicles launched from a vessel off the coast of the United States.

According to the FBI alert, “We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United State Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the US conducted strikes against Iran.” Authorities warned that the potential threat had prompted increased vigilance among law enforcement in the state.

Brett Velicovich, a former US Army intelligence and special operations soldier who previously used drones to target leaders of extremist groups such as ISIS, said Iranian forces possess the technology and capability to launch such attacks. He warned that the FBI’s alert underscores the seriousness of the threat, adding: “We’re extremely vulnerable to drone attacks,” and “We’re not prepared for this.”
