Don’t wear wig, gown before call-to-bar, Legal Council warns candidates

The Council of Legal Education has warned prospective lawyers against wearing wigs and gowns or presenting themselves as qualified legal practitioners on social media before their official Call-to-Bar.

LEGAL COUNCIL WARNS AGAINST WEARING WIG, GOWN BEFORE CALL-TO-BAR

The Council of Legal Education has directed candidates awaiting their Call-to-Bar to stop wearing legal wigs and gowns or presenting themselves as qualified lawyers before formal admission to the Nigerian Bar, Tribune Online reports.

In a notice signed by its Secretary, Aderonke Osho, the Council said some candidates had been posting photos and videos in full court attire, referring to themselves as “Barristers and Solicitors” or using the title “Esquire” before being called to the Bar. It said this breaches Section 22 of the Legal Practitioners Act and Rule 45 of the Rules of Professional Conduct.

The Council ordered affected candidates to take down such content immediately, warning that non-compliance could affect their eligibility for the Call-to-Bar ceremony.
