Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore reportedly collapsed during a protest in Abuja after security operatives allegedly fired tear gas at demonstrators.
According to The Guardian, protesters had gathered in the Federal Capital Territory to voice their grievances when security personnel moved in to disperse the crowd. Witnesses said the use of tear gas triggered panic, forcing many protesters to flee while others reportedly struggled with breathing difficulties.
Sowore, who was among the leaders of the demonstration, was said to have been affected by the gas before collapsing at the scene. His condition was not immediately clear, and security authorities had yet to issue an official statement as of the time of reporting.
The incident has reignited concerns among civil society groups over crowd-control tactics used during public protests in Nigeria.
