SDP crisis deepens as Gabam faction expels Adebayo, 12 others

The leadership crisis in the SDP escalated after the Shehu Gabam faction expelled 13 party members, dissolved the NWC and adopted a new presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.

The leadership crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party deepened on Wednesday as the faction loyal to reinstated National Chairman Shehu Gabam expelled 13 prominent members, including former presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo.

At the party’s convention and presidential primaries in Abuja, delegates loyal to Gabam also adopted businessman Abimbola Atanda as the party’s sole presidential candidate through a voice vote.

The faction further dissolved the National Working Committee and inaugurated a new leadership team led by Gabam. Party officials said those expelled were sanctioned for allegedly undermining the party’s constitution and internal unity.

“These disciplinary measures were taken following findings that the affected individuals acted in ways inconsistent with the ideals, principles, and constitutional provisions of the party,” the party stated.

Reacting, factional spokesman Rufus Aiyenigba dismissed the convention as a “nullity,” insisting Gabam lacked legitimacy despite recognition by Independent National Electoral Commission through a court order.
