Nigerian authorities have heightened security amid intelligence that ISWAP and Boko Haram are planning coordinated attacks on major infrastructure in Abuja and Niger State.
Nigeria’s security forces have been placed on high alert following intelligence that Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram are planning attacks on key infrastructure in Abuja and Niger State. An internal memo from the Nigeria Customs Service said targets include Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and prison facilities.
“Their intention is to release detained terrorists and inflict significant damage on critical aviation infrastructure,” the memo stated. Authorities warned the plot may mirror recent attacks in Niamey and Tahoua. “This suggests a possible intent by terrorists to replicate the attack patterns within Nigeria,” it added.
A senior customs officer said, “The military and paramilitary forces are all on high alert.” Nigeria ranks fourth in the Global Terrorism Index, with ISWAP and Boko Haram responsible for most deaths. The U.S. recently warned, “Terrorists continue plotting and carrying out attacks in Nigeria,” though the government dismissed the advisory.
