Prominent historian Olusegun Osoba dies at 92

Renowned Nigerian historian Olusegun Osoba has died at 92, leaving a lasting academic legacy.

A leading Nigerian historian, Olusegun Osoba, is dead. He was 92. Mr Osoba died on Wednesday at his residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
He trained at the University College Ibadan before proceeding to Moscow State University, where he obtained a PhD in History.

Returning to Nigeria in the early 1960s, he took up an appointment at Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife).
Widely regarded as a distinguished scholar, his work focused on economic history and political economy.
In a statement, the Yusufu Bala Usman Institute praised his contributions to interrogating economic systems and development challenges.

“His work in economic history was groundbreaking in many ways as he sought to expose the actual workings of the economic system that was holding back development in the country.
“Segun is gone but he has left an enduring legacy and a shining example for patriotic Nigerians to emulate,” the statement read.
