Presidency sparks outrage with AI image depicting First Lady as akara seller

The Presidency has released an AI-generated image depicting First Lady Oluremi Tinubu as an akara seller, sparking widespread reactions on social media.

Tinubu Media Centre Releases AI Image of First Lady as Akara Seller

President Bola Tinubu’s official Media Centre shared the image on X on Friday, showing the First Lady in an apron frying akara beside a sign reading “Iya Alakara — Hot and Fresh Akara,” Daily Post reports.

The post followed President Tinubu’s remark at the inaugural Presidential Press Corps Dinner at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja, where he jokingly called the First Lady “Iya Alakara,” a Yoruba expression meaning mother of the akara seller. The joke was itself a callback to the First Lady’s earlier remarks at the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Flow with Confidence campaign launch, where she encouraged women and young people to consider low-capital businesses like selling akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli.

The image drew sharp reactions on X. “Official handle of the president media? This is not comical as it should look. It is utterly ridiculous and grossly insulting,” wrote @DeLta. @Jolly quipped, “You wan shift attention back to akara. We have gone past that. Aso Rock fraud is what we are dealing with now.” @Truth Zone asked, “Someone please tell me this is a parody account because there is no way the president’s media team is brazenly mocking and trolling suffering Nigerians this way.”
