NSA arrests former Customs Comptroller over illegal border route

Former Seme Customs Controller Wale Adenuga was arrested over allegations of creating an illegal border gate used for large-scale smuggling operations between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

Former Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area Command, Comptroller Wale Adenuga, has been arrested over allegations of creating an illegal entry point along the Nigeria-Benin Republic border for smuggling operations.

Sources told SaharaReporters that operatives linked to the Office of the National Security Adviser arrested Adenuga in February 2026 following intelligence reports. The illegal route allegedly involved breaking part of the joint border fence and installing an iron gate for smuggled goods.

“One Mr. Ope Oloko managed the operation daily. Trucks and vehicles loaded with prohibited foreign rice and other contraband passed through the illegal gate unchecked,” a source alleged.

The sources claimed over 10,000 foreign vehicles and prohibited rice passed through the route.

Customs spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada confirmed Adenuga’s redeployment, saying, “He is now with the Human Resources department and has been removed from Seme. That is confirmed.”
