Insecurity will stop after elections – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that Nigeria’s insecurity is a politically sponsored phenomenon that will abruptly end once the 2027 elections are over.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has linked Nigeria’s escalating security challenges to the upcoming 2027 general elections, asserting that the violence is being sponsored by those opposed to President Bola Tinubu’s performance. Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja during the launch of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) Corporate Headquarters, Akpabio claimed that the unrest is a deliberate political tool. He boldly predicted that insecurity would become a “thing of the past” within just two weeks of the elections’ conclusion.

The Senate President further used the platform to mock the current state of the opposition, specifically targeting 2023 Labour Party candidate Peter Obi. Akpabio criticized Obi for allegedly abandoning his previous platform and “shopping” for a new one, suggesting that the opposition’s disarray is the reason they have resorted to sponsoring instability. He appealed to Nigerians to remain patient with the current administration, insisting that the President is on the right track despite the orchestrated distractions.

The comments were made at the commissioning of the new 16-story NRS headquarters, an event attended by President Tinubu, several state governors, and top federal officials. The facility marks a milestone for the recently rebranded revenue agency, formerly known as the FIRS. While Akpabio praised the agency’s leadership for its efficiency, his remarks on the political nature of the country’s bloodshed have already begun to spark significant national debate regarding the government’s approach to security.
