Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says he would not have chosen the same running mate for the 1999 election had he known him as well as he later did, in remarks widely understood to reference Atiku Abubakar.
“If I Had Known Him Better, I Wouldn’t Have Picked Him” — Obasanjo
Old wounds resurfaced at Charly Boy’s memoir launch. Per Premium Times, Obasanjo, speaking during a fireside chat in Lagos, said: “The man I picked as my running mate… if I had known him as I came to know him later, I would not have picked him.”
Though he never named Atiku directly, he referred repeatedly to “my running mate” and “my vice president.” The pair won together in 1999 and 2003 before their relationship soured. Obasanjo insisted he held no bitterness, crediting God for preventing the fallout from derailing his administration’s focus on Nigeria.
