The Ghanaian government says it will begin evacuating the first batch of 300 citizens from South Africa on Thursday following renewed xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the move on X on Monday, describing the safety of Ghanaians abroad as a top priority.
βThe first batch of 300 Ghanaians will be evacuated from South Africa on May 21, 2026. The welfare and safety of all Ghanaians is a non-negotiable priority of the Mahama Administration,β Ablakwa said.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry said the evacuation would be conducted free of charge through a special chartered flight departing from O.R. Tambo International Airport at 5 a.m.
President John Mahama had earlier approved the emergency evacuation of registered citizens affected by the violence.
