Benue: Herdsmen kidnap three mourning siblings, their mother’s corpse

Three siblings transporting their late mother’s remains from Abuja to Benue State for burial have been abducted by suspected armed herdsmen along the Ogobia-Otukpo Road in Ohimini Local Government Area — with gunmen taking not only the children but also their mother’s corpse into the bush.

In one of the most harrowing kidnap incidents in recent memory, armed men in Benue State have abducted three grieving siblings — and taken their dead mother’s body along with them.

The three victims were travelling from Abuja to their hometown of Iklenyi in Okpokwu Local Government Area in the early hours of Saturday, transporting their late mother’s remains for burial, when they were ambushed by suspected armed herdsmen along the Ogobia–Otukpo Road in Ohimini Local Government Area — between Omutele and Ankpechi communities.

Vanguard reports that the journey had already been fraught with difficulty. A mechanical fault delayed the family well into the night, keeping them on a dangerous road until approximately 2:00 a.m.

“Even at about 2am they were still on the road because their vehicle had broken down. After repairing it, they continued the journey because they were determined to take their mother’s body home for burial,” a source familiar with the incident said.

The siblings maintained telephone contact with relatives throughout the trip — until the line went silent at that stretch of road.

“When they got to that area, the armed men abducted all three siblings and even took the corpse of their mother into the bush. As we speak, they are still being held,” the source said.

The source described the incident as deeply painful, appealing to security agencies to act without delay. “It is painful that a family already grieving the loss of their mother has been subjected to this ordeal. They kidnapped not only the children but also took the corpse of a dead woman,” the source said.

Ohimini Local Government Area Chairman Gabriel Adole confirmed he had received reports of the abduction and was travelling to the affected community to gather firsthand information.
