JAPAN JUST MADE TRAVEL A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE
Dreaming of Tokyo? You’ll need a bigger budget.
Japan has approved its first visa fee hike in nearly five decades, and Nigerians — along with foreign nationals worldwide — are about to feel it, according to Punch.
A single-entry visa is jumping from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000, while multiple-entry visas climb from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000, effective for applications from July 1.
Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the fee structure had been frozen since 1978 and needed updating to reflect “inflation, exchange-rate changes and rising administrative costs.” Officials insist tourism won’t be significantly affected.
The hike isn’t isolated either — Japan is also raising charges for residency status changes and permanent residency applications, as it seeks revenue to manage its record 4.13 million foreign resident population recorded at the end of 2025.
Book early. Budget more.
