Begoña Gomez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, must stand trial on corruption charges and has been barred from leaving Spain, according to a court ruling on Saturday.
Investigating judge Juan Carlos Peinado ordered Gomez to surrender her passport, report to court twice a month and remain in the country while the case proceeds. She is accused of using her position as the prime minister’s wife to help secure work contracts, allegations she strongly denies.
The case, brought by far-right groups, adds to mounting political pressure on Sanchez as several corruption probes involving current and former allies move closer to trial. Sanchez has not been accused of wrongdoing and says the investigations are part of a campaign to force him from office.
