Ghana has postponed the evacuation of over 800 of its citizens from South Africa by a few days to complete administrative and security requirements amid ongoing xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals.
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a brief delay in the planned evacuation of its citizens from South Africa, citing administrative and operational hurdles that must first be cleared.
More than 800 Ghanaian nationals have registered with the country’s High Commission in Pretoria requesting evacuation following the recent unrest targeting foreign nationals.
“Considering the numbers involved and the South African legal conditions that have to be met, including mandatory passenger screening, multi-institutional coordination and flight permits, the planned evacuation has been deferred by a few days,” the ministry said.
Ghanaian and South African authorities have since agreed on enhanced pre-evacuation arrangements to accelerate the process once flights commence. The government urged its citizens in South Africa to remain patient as logistical arrangements are finalised.
