President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), succeeding Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose successful second term ends on July 31, 2026. The high-profile appointment was officially announced on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who conveyed the presidency’s absolute confidence in the newly chosen executive. As the administrative transition approaches, President Tinubu has expressed immense confidence that Aina will effectively leverage his technical background and advisory experience to build upon the landmark structural achievements, transparency, and operational systems recorded under the leadership of the outgoing registrar.

1. A Professor of Computer Engineering

Professor Aina is a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, and is highly regarded as a distinguished academic and systems expert with vast experience in national examination systems, digital infrastructure, and institutional reform.

2. He Studied in the United Kingdom

Aina holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, United Kingdom. He also earned an MSc in Internet Computing and Network Security, as well as a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University, UK. In addition to his extensive foreign educational training, he completed the Senior Management Programme at the prestigious Lagos Business School to reinforce his executive leadership capabilities.

3. Began His JAMB Experience During NYSC

According to the Presidency, Aina remarkably first worked with JAMB during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, where he gained foundational, ground-level experience in national admissions and data-driven institutional processes. This initial national service exposure reportedly shaped his long-standing professional interest and subsequent contributions to examination reforms, organizational management, and electronic systems optimization.

4. He Has Worked With Major Examination Bodies

With over 15 years of competitive post-graduation experience operating at the complex intersection of technology, policy, and institutional transformation, Aina has formally consulted for several major examination bodies, including NECO, NABTEB, and different State Ministries of Education. Throughout these high-level consultancies, his specific areas of core expertise have included the deployment of robust ICT systems, the preservation of examination integrity, digital transition, and full-scale operational reform.

5. He Will Become JAMB’s Youngest Registrar

Professor Aina, who will be 40 in July, previously made waves when he became one of Nigeria’s youngest professors of Computer Engineering, and he is now set to make history as the youngest Registrar to ever lead JAMB. He is a certified member of several elite professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). In an interview he granted shortly after he was made a professor, the new JAMB registrar reflected on the philosophy driving his rapid career trajectory, stating, “I think hard work, but I think beyond hard work; I think also smart work. You know, it is not just about working hard; you need to work smart.”
