Boko Haram kingpin Kabiru Sokoto appeals terrorism sentence, claims wrongful conviction

Kabiru Sokoto has appealed his life sentence for the Madalla bombing, citing legal errors, delayed process, and insufficient evidence linking him to terrorism.

Kabiru Umar Sokoto, convicted over the 2011 Madalla church bombing, has appealed his life sentence, according to TheCable.
Sokoto filed an application at the Court of Appeal seeking permission to submit his appeal out of time, citing prolonged incarceration, transfers, and the deaths of his lawyers.

“The Applicant was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment on 20th December, 2013. The Applicant has been continuously incarcerated since then,” the filing reads.
He argued the delay “was not deliberate but occasioned by circumstances beyond the control of the Applicant.”

Sokoto also challenged the legal basis of his conviction, claiming the prosecution failed to prove his involvement in terrorism.
“The learned trial Judge erred in law… whereas the prosecution demonstrably failed to prove the essential ingredients,” the notice stated.
He seeks to overturn the conviction and secure acquittal.
