Suspected Islamist militants killed 17 police trainees in a coordinated attack on a military training school in Yobe State, underscoring ongoing insecurity in Nigeria’s northeast.
At least 17 police trainees were killed after suspected Islamist militants attacked a military training facility in Yobe State, according to Reuters.
The incident occurred on Friday at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, where officers were undergoing specialised training.
Police spokesman Anthony Okon Placid said, “The officers, who were undergoing specialised operational training at the institution, lost their lives when the militants launched a coordinated attack on the facility from multiple directions.”
Several soldiers were also reportedly killed, although no official figure was given.
According to Reuters, the attack highlights persistent insecurity in Nigeria’s northeast, where insurgency linked to Boko Haram and ISWAP has continued for over a decade.
Authorities say efforts to curb the violence include joint operations, which recently killed a senior ISWAP commander in the Lake Chad Basin.
