The President of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Haruna Mamman, has warned that the increasing migration of Nigerian nurses abroad is severely impacting the nation’s healthcare system. He highlighted that over 57,000 nurses have left the country in the last five years seeking better opportunities, with approximately 16,000 moving to the UK alone by December 2025.
Mamman cited “push factors” such as inadequate pay, difficult working conditions, and insecurity as primary drivers for this “brain drain.” The exodus places additional pressure on Nigeria’s already strained health sector, particularly in underserved areas.
