U.S. businessman jailed for $2 million food fraud scheme

Victor Madera, a 67-year-old businessman from New Jersey, has been sentenced to 27 months in prison for a $2 million food fraud scheme. He pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programme (SNAP).

Madera’s grocery store illegally exchanged SNAP benefits for cash, where employees provided recipients a fraction of the transaction value in cash. This scheme resulted in over $2.2 million in fraudulent SNAP redemptions.
