A 20-year-old University of Lagos student testified before a Lagos State High Court on Wednesday, detailing how 53-year-old lecturer Samuel Obinna Ojogbo allegedly lured her to his office and assaulted her following a conversation during an examination.
A 20-year-old student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) took the witness stand at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to recount a harrowing alleged assault by a senior lecturer, Samuel Obinna Ojogbo. Testifying as the first prosecution witness before Justice Oyindamola Ogala, the student detailed the events of August 22, 2025, which led to the two-count charge of rape and sexual assault against the 53-year-old defendant. The victim, led in evidence by prosecution counsel A.O. Azeez, explained that the incident occurred at the university’s Akoka campus around midday, following a series of interactions initiated by the lecturer during an examination period.
The witness recalled that the defendant first approached her on August 21, 2025, while she was seated in the front row during a non-banking related examination. According to her testimony, Ojogbo entered the hall and struck up a conversation about her academic preparation. “The defendant came inside at the first row while I was writing my exam and asked, ‘Hope it is what I read that came out?’ I said yes, that I knew a particular section more than the other section,” she told the court. The student further stated that the lecturer encouraged her and explicitly requested a follow-up meeting, testifying, “He then told me not to worry and that I should come and see him in his office after my exam.”
Despite making two unsuccessful attempts to find the lecturer in his office later that day—once accompanied by a friend—the student returned on August 22, 2025, the day the alleged assault occurred. She noted that Ojogbo was the lecturer in charge of her scheduled 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. examination that morning. The Lagos State Government is spearheading the prosecution as part of its ongoing crackdown on sexual and gender-based violence within tertiary institutions. The trial, which has drawn significant attention from campus rights groups, continues as the court prepares to hear further evidence from the prosecution’s remaining witnesses.
