Kano tragedy: Many buried as brick-making pit collapses

At least 10 brick workers are feared dead or trapped after a deep sand excavation pit collapsed on Wednesday morning in Ridawa village, Ghari Local Government Area of Kano State

Tragedy struck Ridawa village in Ghari Local Government Area of Kano State on Wednesday morning, March 25, 2026, when a deep sand pit used for local brick production collapsed on a group of labourers. The workers were deep within the excavation site when the walls suddenly caved in, burying an unspecified number of people beneath heavy debris. The incident sparked immediate panic, drawing fellow workers and residents to the site to begin a frantic manual rescue effort using basic tools.

Sani Bala, the member representing the Ghari/Tsanyawa Federal Constituency, has confirmed that preliminary reports suggest at least 10 people remain trapped underground. While local volunteers and some emergency responders have been working for hours, the lack of professional machinery has hindered progress, leading to growing fears that the death toll will rise. Residents noted that such disasters are a recurring risk in rural Kano, where high demand for building materials often leads to deep, unregulated excavations conducted without any safety reinforcements or oversight.

In an urgent appeal to the state and federal governments, Sani Bala emphasized the need for specialized equipment to prevent further loss of life. He stated: “We need urgent assistance to save those still trapped. The community is doing its best, but professional rescue support is required.” Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, indicated that while local offices are aware of the reports, they were still awaiting formal details as of Wednesday evening to coordinate a full-scale deployment to the remote village.
