Suspected herdsmen attacked a Mararaba community near Abuja, leaving several people feared dead, homes destroyed, and residents displaced amid rising tensions.
Scores of residents are feared dead after suspected herdsmen attacked Aso A community in Mararaba, a border area between Abuja and Nasarawa State. The attack, which began on Wednesday morning, reportedly left at least six people dead, though the exact casualty figure is yet to be officially confirmed.
The violence was said to have been triggered by an earlier clash between a farmer and a herder that resulted in the herder’s death. In retaliation, the attackers allegedly stormed the farmer’s residence, carried out indiscriminate assaults on residents, and set several houses ablaze, forcing many to flee the community.
Security operatives, including police and military personnel, have been deployed to restore order, while tension remains high amid fears of further reprisal attacks. A motorcyclist conveying a police officer to the scene was reportedly killed, and authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
