A high-stakes legal battle over the estate of the late former Oyo State Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala has surfaced in an Oyo State High Court, revealing a vast portfolio of global assets including a five-star hotel in Ghana and properties across three continents
A major legal dispute has erupted over the multi-billion naira estate of the late former Governor of Oyo State, Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala, revealing an extensive and previously undisclosed list of international and domestic assets. The legal proceedings commenced at an Oyo State High Court in suit marked I/443/2024, where Oluwatoyin Alao Aderinto, the first daughter of the deceased, is formally challenging the current administration of her father’s wealth. Aderinto, asserting her “legal and equitable interests” as the eldest daughter, is seeking judicial intervention against the named defendants, the late politician’s wife, Oluwakemi Alao-Akala, and another daughter, Olamide Alabi, who are identified in court documents as the executors and administrators of the vast estate.
The court filings have pulled back the curtain on the late governor’s global financial reach, detailing premium real estate holdings spanning Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Most notably, the disputed inventory includes a five-star hotel in Ghana and high-end residential properties in New York City and Essex, England. Within Nigeria, the list encompasses significant commercial interests, including several petrol stations, a microfinance bank, a radio station, and thousands of acres of land across Oyo State. The litigation marks a rare public accounting of the private wealth accumulated by the late Ogbomoso-born politician, who passed away in January 2022.
