‘Abysmally incompetent’ — Rotimi Amaechi demands Tinubu’s resignation after 23 die in blasts

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Tinubu, accusing his administration of “killing Nigerians” through an inability to curb the nation’s worsening security crisis

Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation and a recent defector to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), issued a blistering statement on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, in response to the triple suicide bombings in Maiduguri. The attacks, which struck a popular market, a hospital entrance, and a business hub, left at least 23 people dead and 108 injured. Amaechi described the Tinubu-led government as “abysmally incompetent,” alleging that the presidency has grown indifferent to the lives of ordinary citizens while officials continue to live “lavishly and ostentatiously.” He stated: “Tinubu has failed Nigerians. This government is killing Nigerians. I repeat, President Tinubu’s government is killing Nigerians, literally destroying lives. He has failed in the most sacred duty of protecting the lives of the citizens of this country.”

The former governor’s remarks highlight a deepening political rift as the country approaches the 2027 election cycle. Amaechi argued that the Monday night tragedy is not merely an act of terror but a “damning indictment” of a leadership that has failed to confront bandits and insurgents with the necessary seriousness. He criticized the administration’s reliance on what he termed “hollow statements” and “watery condemnations,” noting that the President was preparing for a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom even as the victims in Borno were being evacuated. “How many more lives must be lost before they admit their failure? How many more communities must be shattered and destroyed before they take decisive action?” he questioned, adding that if the government cannot guarantee safety, it has “no business clinging to authority.”

In addition to calling for President Tinubu’s resignation, Amaechi condoled with the people of Borno State and the families of the bereaved. He warned that the current security reality—marked by mass kidnappings and bold insurgent strikes on urban centers—has eroded public trust to a breaking point. Drawing a parallel to his own tenure as governor, Amaechi claimed that the crisis could be solved with the right political will, but insisted that the current administration is “unprepared and unwilling” to make the tough calls required. As security chiefs relocate to Maiduguri on the President’s orders, Amaechi’s rhetoric signals a move toward a more aggressive opposition stance, asserting that “one day, the people will rise and resist incompetence.”
