The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has expanded its global reach by authorizing licensed enrollment centers across four continents, allowing Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain their National Identification Number (NIN) without returning home.
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) announced on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, that Nigerians residing outside the country can now secure their National Identification Number (NIN) through a network of newly approved international enrollment centers. This initiative eliminates the previous necessity for citizens to travel back to Nigeria for biometric registration, a process that has often been a significant hurdle for those living overseas. These authorized centers are managed by licensed Nigerian companies in collaboration with international partner organizations, establishing a presence across strategic locations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America to cater to the growing diaspora population.
Under this decentralized registration framework, applicants are required to visit these designated hubs to provide their mandatory biometric data, including fingerprints and facial photographs, alongside relevant supporting documents. Once captured, the sensitive data is securely transmitted to NIMC’s central database in Nigeria for verification and final processing. This expansion comes at a critical time when the NIN has become an indispensable requirement for various official transactions, ranging from passport renewals and bank account maintenance to land registration and voter identification within Nigeria.
The commission emphasized that the move is part of a broader strategy to ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of their geographical location, is integrated into the national identity system. Ayodele Babalola, Technical Adviser on Media and Communications to the NIMC Director-General, underscored the necessity of this rollout by noting that the system is essential for accessing modern governance tools. According to Babalola, this system is important because “the NIN is now required for many official services,” making it a vital link for Nigerians abroad to maintain their civic and financial connections to their home country.
