A UK court has sentenced Adeleke Adelani to over 13 years in prison for unlawfully terminating his former partner’s pregnancy and assaulting her.
Adeleke Adelani, a Nigerian resident in the United Kingdom, has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison for unlawfully terminating the pregnancy of his former partner.
The court heard that in 2020, he lured the woman, who was nine weeks pregnant, to his home in Letterkenny, Ireland, and forced her to take misoprostol tablets. He pleaded guilty before jury selection began and was already serving a separate seven-year sentence.
In her victim impact statement, the woman said, “I have forgiven the defendant. The forgiveness does not mean what he did was acceptable.” She added, “When he wrongfully imprisoned me and caused the termination of my nine-week pregnancy, he took far more than my freedom.”
Judge John Alymer sentenced him to 11 years, with two years suspended, and five years for assault, with one year suspended, to run concurrently.
