LAMATA will add three eight-coach trains to the Red Line by Q3 2026 to expand capacity, improve passenger comfort, and address technical issues along the Oyingbo–Agbado corridor.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced that the Red Line fleet will be expanded with three new eight-coach trains, adding 24 coaches in total, by the third quarter of 2026 to enhance capacity and passenger comfort. LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, noted the acquisition is part of the authority’s long-term strategy to improve service reliability along the Oyingbo–Agbado corridor. “As part of our long-term strategy to enhance capacity, comfort, and service reliability, LAMATA is pleased to announce the expected delivery and operationalization of additional rolling stock by third quarter of 2026,” he said.
The expansion follows reports of passenger discomfort caused by faulty air conditioning systems on some coaches, with technical teams deployed to restore optimal operation. The Red Line, the first phase of Lagos Rail Mass Transit, spans 27 kilometres and operates under a track-sharing agreement with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, while further phases and the Blue and Green Lines are under ongoing construction.
