ALERT: Fake NIMC website harvests Nigerians’ NIN data

A fraudulent website impersonating the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is harvesting personal information from Nigerians seeking to correct errors on their National Identification Number (NIN).

An investigation by Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) revealed that the suspicious platform mimics official NIMC processes, presenting itself as a government-approved portal for NIN data modification and corrections. The site allegedly lures users with claims of a special intervention by the Federal Government to address widespread complaints about data inaccuracies.

Viral messages circulating on WhatsApp claim that the government has opened a “free correction portal” through NIMC. “Due to high level of complain (sic), the Federal Government have urge NIMC to open up their correctional portal and attend to the complaints of bonafide citizens of Nigeria and correction is free,” the caption to the fake site reads. Users are subsequently directed to unofficial links leading to phishing pages where they are prompted to submit sensitive details, including full name, gender, date of birth, email address, phone number, state and local government area, after selecting from various correction option.
