DSS witness says Owo Church attackers were funded, armed before massacre

A DSS witness told a Federal High Court that ISWAP-linked suspects were funded and armed to carry out the 2022 Owo church massacre, as the trial continues with key evidence admitted.

A Department of State Services (DSS) witness on Tuesday told the Federal High Court in Abuja that suspected terrorists were funded, armed and mobilised to attack St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, on June 5, 2022. The witness, identified as SSI, said the accused were members of ISWAP. “With that, we proceeded to gather intelligence and also exploited technical resources, which eventually led us to the arrest of five persons,” he said.

The witness detailed how weapons and IEDs were supplied and how the attack was executed, resulting in over 40 deaths and more than 100 injuries. He alleged that the fifth defendant distributed ₦800,000 to members before the attack. The court admitted investigation reports, medical records and photographs as exhibits, while Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the trial for continuation.
