US President Donald Trump signaled support for potential regime change in Iran while the Pentagon deployed a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East amid ongoing nuclear diplomacy.
US President Donald Trump on Friday endorsed the idea of potential regime change in Iran, declaring that “tremendous power” will soon be in the Middle East as the Pentagon sent a second aircraft carrier to the region. The announcement comes even as Washington and Tehran continue efforts to revive diplomacy over Iran’s long-running nuclear dispute with the West.
A source briefed on the matter told Reuters that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will hold negotiations with Iran on Tuesday in Geneva, with Oman acting as mediator. The source added that the envoys will also meet officials from Russia and Ukraine on the same day as part of the US push to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
Asked if he wanted regime change in Iran, Trump said it “seems like that would be the best thing that could happen,” adding that “there are people” he would support but declining to specify who. Speaking at a military event at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, he criticized decades of diplomatic talks: “For 47 years, they’ve been talking and talking and talking. In the meantime, we’ve lost a lot of lives while they talk. Legs blown off, arms blown off, faces blown off. We’ve been going on for a long time.” Washington wants nuclear talks to also address Iran’s ballistic missiles, regional support for armed groups, and treatment of its people, while Tehran has said it is open to discussing nuclear curbs in exchange for lifting sanctions but rejects linking the issue to missiles.
