CAF plans to expand AFCON to 28 teams

CAF plans to expand AFCON to 28 teams and introduce the African Nations League in 2029, boosting participation and revenue for African football.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced plans to expand the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) from 24 to 28 teams. CAF president Patrice Motsepe revealed the plan during an executive committee press conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. “AFCON, as we know it, we want to increase it to 28 countries. As we said, that will take place once every four years,” he said.

The expansion aligns with CAF’s shift to a four-year cycle starting in 2028, departing from the traditional biennial schedule. Motsepe also announced the launch of the African Nations League in 2029, aimed at creating an additional revenue stream for the continent’s football body while complementing AFCON tournaments.
