‘I was lured into Russian army’ — Nigerian appeals to FG for repatriation

A Nigerian man, Abubakar Adamu, has appealed to the Federal Government for urgent repatriation from Russia, alleging he was deceived into joining the Russian army after being promised a security job.

Abubakar Adamu, a Nigerian national, has appealed to the Federal Government to facilitate his immediate repatriation from Russia, claiming he was lured into the country’s military under the pretext of securing employment as a security guard. According to Zagazola Makama, Adamu’s legal representatives have formally notified Nigerian authorities about his alleged ordeal.

His lawyers said Adamu travelled to Moscow on a tourist visa issued on October 16, 2025, by the Russian Embassy in Abuja, after he was reportedly promised employment as a sentry. Upon arrival, his travel documents were allegedly confiscated and he was compelled to sign enlistment papers written entirely in Russian without the assistance of an interpreter.

Adamu later discovered that he had been enlisted into the Russian army, his lawyers claimed, adding that he is currently stranded at a Russian military camp after refusing deployment to combat zones in Ukraine. The legal representatives are seeking urgent diplomatic intervention to secure his return to Nigeria.
