Akpabio’s police rider dies in tanker crash

A police outrider in Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s convoy died Sunday after a petrol tanker struck the convoy in Ibadan, Oyo State. The officer, identified as Deputy Superintendent of Police Ibrahim Hussaini, was killed shortly after the convoy departed from the airport. Akpabio was in Oyo State to attend a chieftaincy installation ceremony for a fellow senator when the fatal accident occurred.

Akpabio announced the tragedy during Tuesday’s Senate plenary session, revealing the officer had just been buried in Kogi State. “We went to Oyo State for the installation of our colleague. Unfortunately, my dispatch rider was run over by a tanker driver, and his head was shattered. We just buried him 15 minutes ago in Kogi State. He left two wives and four children,” Akpabio said during the session.

The Senate President pledged to provide employment for two of Hussaini’s eldest children in government parastatals or his private enterprises. Senator Sunday Karimi noted that Hussaini, who hailed from Kogi State, had served on Akpabio’s security detail since 2023 and was due to retire next year. Lawmakers observed a minute of silence for the deceased officer.
