“Ungrateful hypocrite”: UK activist slams Anthony Joshua for waving Nigerian flag

Nick Buckley, a British charity worker and political activist, sparked outrage after criticising Nigerian-British former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua on social media.

In a post on Saturday, December 20, via X, Buckley wrote: “Anthony Joshua is a good example of what is wrong with mass immigration,” adding that Joshua was an “anti white racist” and an “ungrateful hypocrite” for waving the Nigerian flag while living in Britain. His remarks referenced Joshua’s past statements during Black Lives Matter protests and his heritage, provoking strong reactions online.

Buckley’s comments generated widespread condemnation, with X users accusing him of racism and hate speech. Matthew Stadlen wrote, “Your posts are good examples of racism, Nick,” while another user, Big Wiz, stated, “He’s literally a British boxer and has represented Britain throughout his career.”

Many others defended Joshua’s dual heritage and his right to celebrate his Nigerian roots, highlighting his accomplishments, including his recent victory over Jake Paul in a high-profile global bout.

Buckley, awarded an MBE in 2019 for charity work, has a history of controversial statements, particularly on African and Black Lives Matter issues. He founded The Mancunian Way, a Manchester-based charity, and has been involved in local politics, including candidacies for Mayor of Greater Manchester under Reform UK and as an independent. Currently, he is affiliated with the far-right party Advance UK, advising on social policy, and remains a polarising figure in public discourse.
