President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has warned state governors that he may issue an Executive Order to enforce direct allocation of funds to local governments if states fail to comply with a Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to the councils. The warning was issued on Friday at the 15th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.
Recalling the July 11, 2024 judgment, Tinubu said the apex court ruled it unconstitutional for states to withhold local government funds. “The Supreme Court has capped it for you again, saying, ‘give them their money directly,’” he said. “If you wait for my Executive Order, because I have the knife, I have the yam, I will cut it.”
At the meeting, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, dismissed opposition criticism as “shallow,” saying the party was strengthening its structures nationwide. NEC members also adopted motions on e-membership registration, party congresses, and endorsed Tinubu for a second term, with governors and party leaders in attendance.
