Nigerian Olympian Olufunke Oshonaike has been appointed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission, making her the first Nigerian member. Her nomination by IOC President Kirsty Coventry aims to finalize the commission’s composition before the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games. Oshonaike, a seven-time Olympian, expressed pride in representing Nigeria and Africa.
The appointment includes four other international athletes: Soraya Aghaei Haji Agha (Iran), Husein Alireza (Saudi Arabia), Cheick Sallah Cissé (Ivory Coast), and Mariana Pajón (Colombia). IOC AC Chair Emma Terho highlighted that their diverse experience would strengthen discussions. Oshonaike stated this fulfills her dream to impact the sport.
