New poll reveals top GOP contender for 2028 as Trump exit looms

Vice President JD Vance is leading the 2028 Republican field with 46% support in a new Emerson College poll, far ahead of Rubio and DeSantis.

Vice President JD Vance has emerged as the leading contender for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, according to a new Emerson College survey.

Vance polled at 46% among GOP primary voters — a sharp rise from 30% in November — placing him well ahead of Senator Marco Rubio (12%) and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (9%).

Independent cabinet members Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Kristi Noem trailed with 5% and 2% respectively, while six other names registered 1% or less.

The national poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters between June 24–25, including 416 Republican respondents, with a 4.8% margin of error.

Seventeen percent remain undecided.

Former President Donald Trump, who has ruled out a third term, praised both Vance and Rubio in a May interview but declined to name a successor.

On the Democratic side, Pete Buttigieg leads narrowly with 16%, followed by Kamala Harris (13%) and Gavin Newsom (12%), though 24% of Democrats remain undecided.
