IPOB responds to Kenyan court’s declaration of Kanu’s arrest as illegal

IPOB has welcomed a Kenyan court’s ruling declaring Nnamdi Kanu’s 2021 arrest and transfer illegal. The court awarded damages and condemned both Nigeria and Kenya.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has welcomed the ruling of Kenya’s High Court declaring the 2021 arrest and transfer of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, illegal and unconstitutional.

Justice E.C. Mwita, who delivered the judgment on Tuesday, held that Kanu was abducted, tortured, and flown to Nigeria without any legal process, in violation of both Kenyan law and international norms. The court awarded him KSh10 million in damages.

“Kanu entered Kenya legally and was entitled to constitutional protections,” Justice Mwita said.

Reacting in a statement on Friday, IPOB said the ruling confirms its longstanding position that Kanu was subjected to extraordinary rendition.

“He was abducted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, tortured, and flown to Abuja without any legal hearing or court order,” said IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful.
