The Federal Government and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have strongly cautioned against any move to reinstate the petrol subsidy. They argue that such a reversal would reintroduce the financial strains, economic disruptions, and uncertainties that led to its removal. This firm stance comes in response to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s call for the subsidy’s return. The APC National Chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, and Information Minister Mohammed Idris separately criticized Abubakar’s proposal.
President Bola Tinubu had ended the subsidy regime on May 29, 2023, deeming it unsustainable. He pledged that the allocated funds would be redirected to crucial sectors like infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Abubakar, however, contends that Nigerians haven’t seen tangible benefits from the savings and demands an accounting of the funds, proposing a different, more transparent subsidy model if elected in 2027.
